Duck Hook Golf: Building a Golf Brand From Scratch
January 31, 2026
The Idea
Every golfer knows the duck hook. That violent, low, snap-left shot that dives into the trees before you can even finish your follow-through. It's the shot that makes you question every decision that led you to this moment.
It's also the most honest shot in golf. Because while the pros are out there shaping baby fades and sticking approach shots to tap-in range, the rest of us are just trying to keep it in play. And sometimes—often—we fail spectacularly.
Duck Hook Golf is a brand for those golfers. The weekend warriors. The 18-handicappers who grind for bogeys. The guys who lose three balls a round and still call it a good day. The ones who've never broken 80 and might never will, but show up every Saturday anyway.
It's golf for the rest of us.
Why I'm Doing This
I like building things. I like golf. And I want to see if it's possible to build a real brand from absolutely nothing—no connections in the industry, no investors, no influencer following, no shortcuts.
Just an idea, a logo, and the willingness to figure it out in public.
This is a bootstrapped experiment. Every dollar spent comes out of my pocket. Every win and every mistake gets documented here. If it works, you'll see exactly how. If it fails, you'll see exactly why.
The Thesis
Can you build a golf lifestyle brand from scratch, with no budget, no industry connections, and no built-in audience—just by showing up consistently and documenting the process?
I don't know. Let's find out.
The Plan
Start simple. Start small.
The first step is merch—hats and apparel. Golf is a gear-heavy culture, and the barrier to entry for testing designs is low. I can launch a small run, see what resonates, and iterate from there.
From there, who knows. Content. Community. Gear reviews. Course coverage. Collaborations. The roadmap is intentionally open because I want to follow what works rather than force a predetermined path.
Every Saturday, I'll publish an update here documenting what I've done, what I've learned, and what's next. Think of it as a build log for a brand.
The Name and the Logo
The name "Duck Hook" works because every golfer gets it immediately. It's self-deprecating. It's honest. It says "we're not pretending to be something we're not."
The logo takes the pun a step further. It's a duck doing a sky hook—Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's iconic basketball move—but with a golf ball. The "hook" in Duck Hook isn't just the golf shot, it's also a nod to one of the most unstoppable moves in sports history. A little absurd, a little vintage, and memorable enough to work on a hat or a headcover.

What's Next
Right now I'm in the earliest stages: logo done, domain secured, researching merch production partners. The first weekly update will cover what's been accomplished so far and what the immediate next steps look like.
If you want to follow along, check back every Saturday. The store at duckhookgolf.co isn't live yet, but it's coming.
Let's see if this thing has legs.
This is a personal project documented for educational and entertainment purposes. Duck Hook Golf is an independent brand with no affiliation with any professional golf organization. All opinions are my own. Results—financial or otherwise—are not guaranteed and will be reported honestly whether positive or negative.
