The Morning From Hell

Let me walk you through what it feels like to get kicked in the teeth by the market.

Yesterday I bought HOOD before earnings. 87% odds of beating on Polymarket. Beat 8 of the last 9 quarters. Wall Street loved it.

They missed. Slightly. And I woke up to a bloodbath.

๐Ÿ’€ The HOOD Disaster

  • Entry: $86.12
  • After-hours: Held $79... then $78.50 pre-market
  • At open: Broke down through $78, then $77
  • Exit: $76.00
  • Loss: -$118.20 (-11.8%)

87% odds. And I landed in the 13%. That's the earnings game.

The lesson? Probability is not certainty. 87% still means 13% of the time you get wrecked.

The Immediate Pivot

No time to sulk. I had ~$930 in cash and needed to put it to work.

SHOP had just reported earnings โ€” beat revenue by $80M, guided for +30% growth. The stock was... dumping?

Wait, what?

SHOP had run up 13% into earnings. Now it was getting hammered despite good numbers. Classic "sell the news" โ€” and potentially a massive opportunity.

I bought the dip at $117.69.

Then I watched it drop to $109.

The Bloodbath

For about two hours, I questioned every life decision that led me to this moment.

TimeSHOP PriceMy Gut
9:30am ET (Open) $117 Bought the dip
10:00am $114 Hmm, still dropping
10:30am $111 This doesn't make sense
11:00am $109 Am I going to lose everything today?
1:00pm $115 Wait, it's recovering?
4:00pm (Close) $118.80 Holy... I'm green.

From -7.4% to +0.9% in a single day. I held through the carnage. The fundamentals were good. And eventually, the market agreed.

What Actually Happened

Here's what I figured out watching the tape all day:

SHOP hit $140 in after-hours trading BEFORE earnings dropped. Then after they BEAT estimates, it dumped to $109. That's a 22% swing on good news.

That makes zero sense โ€” unless you understand the game being played.

๐ŸŽญ The Setup

  • Pre-earnings: Big players load up, run it to $140
  • Earnings drop: They SELL into the good news
  • Algo cascade: Algorithms see selling, amplify it
  • Retail panic: "Why is it dumping on a beat?!"
  • Bottom: Smart money quietly buys back at $109
  • Recovery: Stock returns to fair value

It's a playbook. And retail traders like me are the ones getting shaken out.

The Algo Grind

Between 10am and 12pm, I watched SHOP bounce in a tight range โ€” $114 to $116, over and over, in tiny increments.

This is what algorithmic trading looks like. High-frequency traders scalping pennies, grinding the stock in a range, shaking out anyone with a stop-loss.

The same thing happened with HOOD yesterday. The same pattern. The same feeling of being stuck in quicksand while machines trade circles around you.

๐Ÿ“š What I Learned About Algos

  • Don't buy at open: The first 90 minutes are chaos. Algos are most active. Wait for the "dead zone" (11:30am-2pm ET).
  • They hunt stop-losses: Round numbers ($115, $110) are targets. Use mental stops at weird prices ($111.47) or no stops at all.
  • Volume exhaustion is your signal: When the range gets tight and volume dries up, algos are leaving. That's when real buyers step in.
  • They can't read earnings reports: Fundamentals eventually win. If a stock dumps on good news, patience beats speed.
  • Don't chase, don't panic: They WANT you to react emotionally. The algos profit from your fear and greed.

The Survival

I didn't sell at $109. I didn't panic. I trusted the fundamentals โ€” SHOP beat earnings and guided for 30% growth. The dump didn't match the news.

By end of day, I was green.

๐Ÿ’ช SHOP Position

  • Entry: $117.69
  • Low of Day: $109.00 (-7.4%)
  • Close: $118.80
  • Current P/L: +$8.78 (+0.9%)

Holding for a move back toward $130-140 where it was trading before the manipulation.

The Day's Damage Report

TradeResult
HOOD earnings play-$118.20 (-11.8%)
SHOP dip buy+$8.78 (+0.9%)
Net Day-$109.42

Without the HOOD disaster, I'd be up ~7% on this experiment. One bad earnings play erased two weeks of gains.

Lessons Learned

  • Earnings plays are coin flips: Even 87% odds can destroy you. Size accordingly.
  • Don't fight algos at open: Wait for the chaos to settle. The dead zone is your friend.
  • Stocks can dump on good news: "Sell the news" is real. The move happens BEFORE earnings, not after.
  • Fundamentals win eventually: If you trust the thesis, hold through the manipulation.
  • Cut losers, let winners ride: I cut HOOD fast. I held SHOP through the blood. Both were right decisions.

What's Next

Holding SHOP for a move back toward $130-140. The earnings were good. The dumping was artificial. Fair value is higher.

And maybe, just maybe, I'll think twice before playing another earnings lottery.
